2018 Match Day Results: New States, New Specialties, New Records
Without a doubt, one of the most stressful and exciting days in the lives of medical students, is Match Day. And 2018 was no exception. First, we want to congratulate our 2018 match candidates. We could not be more proud of another record setting year in the match.
This year, we broke new ground in programs, specialties, and states. We also returned to programs across the US and Canada that stand testament to the reputation of past Trinity residents. They continue to open doors for their fellow alums with their work ethic, compassion, and integrity. We are proud and grateful in equal measure of what Trinity graduates have accomplished in our school’s first ten years.
For the most part, the programs and specialties will speak for themselves below in the infographic. That said, we may pop in to offer some additional information when we have extra exciting news to share.

The 2018 Match Day Results
The map above represents the states and provinces in which Trinity graduates have either matched or obtained a medical license since the inaugural class graduated in 2012. Please note that the states where Trinity graduates haven’t matched or aren’t licensed is not an indication that they can’t.
This year, five additional states were added through the Match: Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Additionally through graduates applying for state licensure we now count Tennessee, New Hampshire and Massachusetts as states where we’ve earned approval. Early on, the majority of Trinity’s applicants were from the Eastern US. As the school has grown, so has the geographic diversity of applicants that seek us out. Through this, we continue to press into the Western states and across Canada.
Standout Matches
This year represents our largest group of students entering the match to date, and our percentage of matches not only held, it increased. With that, let’s get into the specific states and programs for 2018. Trinity School of Medicine graduates returned to CCHS’s anesthesiology department this year. Our most recent match will be following in the footsteps of Dr. Charles “Gil” Boland, another Trinity grad. We’re also proud to announce a return to Arizona with Trinity’s first neurology match and our first match-year at Augusta University’s Medical College of Georgia. Trinity’s US headquarters are outside Atlanta, so we’re always glad to see a long tradition of Trinity residents serving communities in Georgia continue.
Match in Pediatrics
Trinity had a very strong match in pediatrics this year, with nine matches across the US, including our first resident match in Iowa. Trinity residents are returning to Sinai in Maryland, Crozer in Pennsylvania, and Hackensack UMC. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in five out of six match years.
Family Medicine Match
Family medicine is always a significant element of any match year, especially with Trinity’s goal of, among other things, alleviating the primary care physician shortage. Notably, this is the school’s first resident in Oklahoma, as well honorable mentions for matches in the highly competitive Ontario and Montreal match iterations via CaRMS, the Canadian match.
New Match Programs in Pathology
We have two new programs in pathology, University of Miami School of Medicine and UAB School of Medicine. This is the second year in a row a Trinity graduate has matched to Fairview Hospital in Ohio. In transitional medicine, we’re happy to have another Georgia residency, this time at Gwinnett Medical Center.
Internal Medicine Matches
Internal medicine is the backbone of the healthcare system at the physician level, as well as a tremendous launching pad to a nearly uncountable number of sub-specialties. It exists in that optimal space, providing excellent primary care while opening doors to future career paths for our graduates. Many-to-most of these programs are a return for Trinity residents, with Missouri and Kansas standing out as a first-time matches in those states.
The Missouri-Kansas matches are particularly interesting. Our students matched through a dual-state program through a single hospital (Research Medical Center) near the state line, serving communities in both. Finally, we have our second of two matches at Augusta University’s Medical College of Georgia, as mentioned earlier, this is our first year with the program. An informal benchmark of what a school can offer its graduates among applicants involves matching or practicing in Texas, New York, and Florida. We are glad to continue to place residents in programs in both of these states. To do so with surgical residents should serve as an additional indicator of what Trinity graduates can and do achieve. As mentioned in the prior section, this is also the first time our graduates matched into programs in Missouri.
Trinity grads matching into the Larkin Community Hospital psychiatric program will be following in the footsteps of prior alumni spotlight, Dr. Amy Hernandez, who not only trained there, she served as chief resident, continuing Trinity’s unbroken line of graduates in leadership.
Each year, Trinity School of Medicine graduates make us proud. Whether they do this through their dedication to pursuing a career in medicine, their deep connection with the community of St. Vincent, or their continued leadership after they move on to the next phase of their training like Dr. Hernandez and her fellow Trinity-educated chief residents, they prove that we were right to open the doors they needed to not just survive, but thrive as physicians.
